Nicknamed ‘The Rock’, Monaco Ville is the south-central and smallest district of the principality and with its quiet, almost entirely pedestrian cobbled streets, has retained much of its old town medieval charm. Only local vehicles are allowed in Monaco Ville and petrol-powered motorcycles are permitted only until late evening.
The constitutional monarch, Prince Albert II, and his family live here in the lavishly converted thirteenth century fortress, now known as the Palais Princier, which sits just in front of the dome of ‘The Rock’ and this district is also home to the imposing Saint Nicholas Cathedral, the final resting place of many of the royal family including Prince Albert II’s mother, the one and only Princess Grace.
